Protecting the Great Lakes
Protecting the Great Lakes
Ever since they entered the lower Mississippi River some 50 years ago, invasive carp have spread in every direction, multiplying rapidly in scores of tributaries, lakes and reservoirs throughout the Mississippi River basin. Because of their voracious feeding habits, prolific reproduction and lack of predators, invasive carp soon grew abundant in the Illinois River, a tributary of the Mississippi River, and other areas surrounding the Great Lakes basin. The Invasive Carp Regional Coordinating Committee is made up of 26 organizations in the United States and Canada leveraging our expertise and resources to protect the Great Lakes from the threat of invasive carp.
