The Mississippi Interstate Cooperative Resource Association

The Invasive Carp Regional Coordinating Committee is not the only partnership confronting the invasive carp threat. In fact, dozens of partners have formed additional regional partnerships throughout the Mississippi River basin to coordinate invasive carp management. There are six partnerships organized for the main sub-basins of the Mississippi River, all under the umbrella of the Mississippi Interstate Cooperative Resource Association, known as MICRA. Independently and altogether, these partnerships are among the largest coordinated conservation efforts in North America.

Brandon Road Interbasin Project

A number of the Invasive Carp Regional Coordinating Committee members’ technology research projects over the years helped inform the design of the Brandon Road Interbasin Projects, a state-of-the-art, multi-layered deterrent at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam on the Illinois River near Joliet, about 40 miles from Lake Michigan. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the States of Illinois and Michigan are leading its development. By integrating different deterrent technologies, it is designed to create a more robust line of defense against the upstream movement of invasive species toward the Great Lakes. The project’s construction phase began in 2024.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study webpage

The Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study, produced by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, presents a range of options to prevent invasive species movement between the Mississippi River and Great Lakes basins through aquatic pathways. The study focuses on the Chicago Area Waterway System, the only continuous connection between the two basins, and other intermittent connections along the 1,500-mile-long basin divide.
